'Labrador' is an album I began working on in late 2012. I started composing simple folk inspired melodies, singing and playing guitar, as a fun escape from the more electronic centered music I had been heavily involved in at the time. The first recording sessions started in the summer of 2013, at a family cabin in the Northeast Kingdom, Vermont. I stayed there alone for 2 weeks with a small studio setup and a few guitars. I recorded the first 4 songs that would come to make up 'Labrador' on that trip. It started out as a sort of musical diary for myself and some close friends I shared it with, I didn't have much of an aspiration to release the work initially. I found myself returning to Vermont every summer for a get-away and the inspiration to record and write more songs in this fashion grew. With the help and guidance from some very dear friends, I slowly pulled and pieced together these songs into a body of work that I felt needed to be shared.
I have so many people to thank for guiding me, encouraging me, and lending a hand in the production of this album. First and foremost, thank you to my parents and sister, who not only contributed their art, but have always supported me in my artistic endeavors and have been a monumental artistic inspiration for me as well. Thank you to David James for lending me your dobro guitar for so many years, the sound of that instrument really helped to shape this album. Thank you to Danielle Warman, you were one of the first people I showed the early recordings to and you encouraged me to continue recording and exploring this sound. Thank you to Alex DeTurk and Alexa Cabellon, our trip to VT was a time I won't forget. Alexa, your input and advice was an essential part to the success of the sessions that week. Alex, I learned so much from you, helping me record, and playing on 'Price You Pay' and 'Make Me a Pallet on the Floor'. Your drumming is always on point, and straight to the point, lending itself perfectly to the song. And, your mastering of the album truly pulled everything together. Thank you to Blanka Maderova, you helped encourage me at a time when I needed most, this album was 80% done and I wanted nothing to do with it at the time. You pushed me to pick it up again and put the finishing touches on. Thank you to Caitlin LeQuire for (nearly daily) reminding me that I should be focused on finishing Labrador these past two years. It's a blessing to have a partner believe in you and your work so much, thank you. Thank you to Nick Fox for your drumming, that was the last major piece to fall into place in the completion of this album.
